Our Work

In accordance with YARN’s mission, we have conceptualized numerous initiatives in collaboration with Delhi based NGO, Nai Disha. Here’s what we have implemented so far:

YARN donated 30 copies of books such as Trishanku by Mannu Banari, Pinjar by Amrita Pritam, and Aasmaan ki Rani by Mamang Dai, to the students of Amrita Pritam. This donation marked the first step in our efforts to create a library for the students, to encourage reading and provide them with a dedicated space to study.

We developed the Y.A.R.N Curriculum, designed to encourage voracious reading, and assist students in becoming better readers. The curriculum is a compilation of 7 original chapters that seek to explain some key aspects of literature to students, including literary devices and ideas such as subtext.

This authored curriculum was used as reference material for subsequent workshops I conducted for the students of Nai Disha, who came together to learn more about literature and its many intricacies. These workshops were interactive, and employed various activities to capture students’ attention and help them understand the resource material easily.

The first workshop consisted of a reading session and discussion, and several storytelling activities. The students spoke about their favorite stories, and practiced their oration and worldbuilding abilities by creating a story together and building on each other’s responses.

The second session was aimed at helping students better understand the idea of genre in storytelling, and how it impacts what we read. We went over the numerous types of genres, and discussed how different literary works can be classified under certain specific genres. We also discussed how genres can play a significant role in deciding what we enjoy reading and what we don’t, and how it signifies our taste and what we look for in art.

The third workshop focused on literary devices and their function in literature. Attendees practiced decoding various literary devices, and came up with their own. They also learned more about the application of devices such as hyperbole, personification, and similes. Finally, they practiced identifying literary devices in the books that they were reading!

Nai Disha Fundraiser

In order to help Nai Disha and its students further, we conducted an online fundraiser to aid their current programs. The fundraiser was able to successfully raise INR 50,000: https://milaap.org/fundraisers/support-students-at-the-nai-disha-educational-and-cultural-society utm_source=whatsapp&utm_medium=fundraisers-title&mlp_referrer_id=7460768

Pen Pal Initiative with Sukhad & Hamari Pehchaan

The YARN pen pal initiative was organized as a pen pal session to connect young students with one another and learn how to write informal letters. The goal behind this initiative was to encourage these children to discuss their reading journey and share their own experiences and reflections.
